Stellenbosch FC have voiced their discontent following a contentious decision that allowed Kaizer Chiefs to score a late goal in their Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. The controversial goal contributed to Stellenbosch’s 3-1 defeat, ending their cup run and marking their third loss to Chiefs across all competitions this season.
The key moment of the match came in added time when Pule Mmodi scored for Kaizer Chiefs. Initially, the assistant referee raised his flag for what appeared to be a foul on Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens by a Chiefs player. However, after a brief consultation with his assistant, center referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa overturned the initial decision and awarded the goal.
This ruling left Stellenbosch FC and their supporters outraged. The club took to social media, posting on X (formerly Twitter): "We've seen this story before Chiefs score, the goal is ruled out, then given. They score again. Our cup run ends. Stellenbosch FC 1️⃣–3️⃣ Kaizer Chiefs."
The decision sparked heated debates among football fans, with opinions divided over the referee's call. Some defended the referee, while others sympathized with Stellenbosch’s frustration.
Ndlombango ka Tomase wrote: "The assistant referee raised the flag, the referee signaled that it was a goal. The referee consulted with his assistant. Ultimately, the assistant referee couldn’t overrule the referee. On the flip side, Toure handled the ball in the box, and he was not even booked. Did you complain about that? Noooo."
Sibonelo Mvelase commented: "You might be surprised, the linesman wanted to give a penalty."
Dumehleli Jongilizwe-Aah Ndabezitha added: "You would have lost the game even if the goal was disallowed! You should have got a red card a long time ago! Just move on! Even the so-called foul by Matlou was a very soft touch, which did not even interfere with your goalkeeper’s strength. He managed to punch the ball away, which is exactly what he wanted to do. Go and watch the replay."
Despite the controversy, Kaizer Chiefs secured their place in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, joining their city rivals Orlando Pirates. Goals from Inacio Miguel, Pule Mmodi, and Mfundo Vilakazi ensured their victory over Stellenbosch.
With their cup dreams dashed, Stellenbosch FC will now shift their focus back to league competition. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs will look ahead to their next challenge as they continue their pursuit of silverware in the Nedbank Cup.
