Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Samir Nurkovic has expressed a desire to return to Amakhosi, just over two years after leaving the club. The Serbian forward, who was a fan favorite during his initial stint at Chiefs, is currently a free agent following his departure from TS Galaxy earlier this month.
Nurkovic, 31, parted ways with Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the 2021/22 season after the club decided not to renew his contract. His time at TS Galaxy has been cut short under controversial circumstances, as it is believed that the player requested to have his contract terminated.
When the club refused, Nurkovic reportedly arrived late for pre-season training, a move that upset Galaxy owner Tim Sukazi and head coach Sead Ramovic, leading to his release.
The striker's exit from TS Galaxy comes as Kaizer Chiefs continue to search for a prolific forward. Amakhosi missed out on Iqraam Rayners, who signed with Mamelodi Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC, and are also reportedly struggling to secure Fiston Mayele from Egypt's Pyramids FC.
With the club in need of attacking reinforcements, Nurkovic is reportedly eager to make a comeback.
A source close to the situation revealed that Nurkovic would be thrilled to return to Chiefs, where he made a significant impact during his first season in South African football.
“He still believes that he has unfinished business with Chiefs. He loves the club and their supporters. He would jump at an opportunity to play for Chiefs again,” the source told the *Mgosi Squad*.
Nurkovic first joined Kaizer Chiefs in July 2019 and quickly became a key player for the team. He endeared himself to the fans by scoring 14 goals in 31 appearances during the 2019/20 season, earning the nickname “Kokota Piano” from supporters.
However, his subsequent seasons were less prolific, with injuries taking a toll on his performances. In the 2020/21 season, Nurkovic netted just six goals, and in his final season at Chiefs, he scored only once in 15 appearances.
With Chiefs struggling to find a reliable goalscorer and Nurkovic keen to return, it remains to be seen whether the club will consider bringing him back.
